Don’t want to hear it

I just realized something over lunch. I work for an organization which is comprised of a lot of people who assume the attitude, when they hear of people protesting something about the U.S., ‘If you don’t like it, leave!”. My office is based in a town that is very progressive, open to the arts and alternative lifestyles and yet is nestled in the middle of the Bible Belt (Billy Graham has his training center right up the road). So, the meeting of the my colleagues and this location is like gas and fire, at least in terms of how much the former will complain about the latter. And yet, when local people find out who we are, they are often openly grateful to us for what we do, even to the point of stopping us on the street to thank us; occasionally, it even happens that people will pick up our tab at a restuarant if they see us there.
Now, what I realized is this: A great friend of mine at work and I have both decided to move on to other jobs, away from here, despite our love for this town. Compare that to these other people we work with who complain all day long about how bad this town is and do nothing to leave; some of them even retire here. I’m not really able to say so to their faces, so I’ll say it here: If you don’t like it here, get the hell out!!
It really is true, it seems to me because of this example, that are some people who complain simply to do so. Are their lives so small?
