A baby and a waterfall

We took Maggie to Looking Glass Falls tonight. It was really a gratifying experience for me as her father to get her out into at least a little bit of nature. (By the way, if you live around here and have never been, you really ought to go…the falls are beautiful to look at and there is sufficient water depth at the bottom for swimming.) It brings to mind my hope to get her into the natural environment as much as possible, beginning now and lasting for as long as she will have it. I don’t care who you are, if you are willing to look, you can see that nature has a tremendous amount to teach all of us. And I desperately hope to raise Maggie with that same spirit.
Along those lines, I have been trying to read (seems that new dads don’t have a lot of time for such things) Last Child In The Woods by Richard Louv. The premise of the book is that modernity has brought about a detrimental change in the way Western children relate to the natural environment. I really see a lot of validity in what he writes and intend on taking his recommendations for reversing the change seriously.
Anyway, check out the Flickr gallery for pictures from tonight.
