Who knows what lies beneath?

There are few things, or perhaps more than I think, that are truly universal. An inexplicably crying baby is one. Maggie, over the last several days, has been in quite the fussy rut. We can’t figure out what is wrong with her: she’s not hungary, hot, cold, uncomfortable, in pain, needing changed, or any of the other typical conditions of infanthood, and yet she cries. Sometimes, her crying is mild and sometimes it is downright horrendous screaming. My mind, filled as it is images and ideas from movies and TV, drifts off into thoughts of her’s being a tortured soul, longing to express itself, or of being contained in an as yet insufficiently developed body, unable to propel itself toward the other side of the room where, surely, the secret to happiness must reside. I, of course, must whip my head around when these thoughts captivate me and correct my course; the child is most likely in need of relief from intestinal discomfort or some such unseen torment. I guess the truth is, we will never know.

Babies cry, for whatever reason. She may need to be in bigger space where she can roll around and practice struting her stuff. Some babies are criers and there is no cure until they decide to stop. I don`t think there is any consolilng, at least that was my experience.
