The long road home

To our faithful readers, we extend our most sincere apologies for the lack of posts the last few days. We were traveling for the holiday weekend and had no internet access. We have not yet completely stretched ourselves into the digital age by acquiring a laptop with wi-fi access capabilities. I will need one when I go to school in Alabama in Sept., so look forward to posts from the road then and during the Long Trip westward.

Anyway, this weekend was full of many ups and downs. The first was, of course, the long drive. It’s always worth the effort to see family; nevertheless, it’s still a long drive, about 1000 miles round trip. We almost didn’t go because of how badly my Grandma was feeling.  This was to be the first time her and Grandpap would meet their first and only (thus far) great-grandchild, so we had a great deal of motivation to go. In addition to that, my Dad and Marty and my aunt and her boys hadn’t met her yet either, so there were all kinds of reasons to go. We finally decided to make the trip and we’re glad we did.

Maggie did not do very well on the road this time. I was amazed and encouraged when we went to Florida a couple weekends ago and she did so well. This time, however, we were slowed down quite a bit and needed to stop more than normal to care for the crying babe. An up of the trip was the hotel we stayed in; it wasn’t great by any means but it was a good value for the money spent. Anyway, we got there Friday and checked in to bed from a long day on the road. The next day, we spent some time with everyone. We decided that we had better cut the trip short and leave on Sunday; we have a ton of stuff left to do before we can put the house on the market. We got up Sunday, had breakfast with Dad and Marty and headed over to Grandma and Grandpap’s for a little while. We left around 2pm and got in around 1am. Another up of the trip was one of the stops we made along the way. We didn’t actually pay to go into the park but did go down to the public boat landing. We heard later that you aren’t able to eat the fish caught in the lake due to some kind of pollution. It’s always such a shame to hear that kind of thing but it is truly the price we pay for our unchecked consumption.

Sorry for the sort of fragmented post; lately, I’ve noticed that I do not tolerate long trips as well I did even just a couple of years ago. My mind and body usually need a day to recover. Oh well, to steal a lyric from Neil and bastardize it a bit, 32 and there’s so much more.
