I hate people

My fellow instructor, JC, has a student who told a very, very sad story today. To tell it correctly and effectively, I first have to tell you that there is something very big going on in Idaho right now. The Special Olympics World Winter Games are being conducted here this year. It is the single biggest event Idaho has ever experienced. There are people visiting and participating from dozens of countries.

Now, with that said, let’s get on with the story. The student, Jose, participates in triathons (running, biking, and swimming all in the same event). We had a three day weekend this weekend, so Jose got it in his head to ride his bike to the Oregon state line, a distance of probably 60-70 miles. It just so happens that Jose has a medium complexion and could be mistaken as someone from a foreign country, if someone is so ignorant as to assume that having a little brown in your skin makes you foreign. Anyway, Jose’s pedaling down the road. A truck pulls out, the passenger side window comes down, and a cup of coffee is thrown at Jose. As if this wasn’t enough, the pile of shit disguised as a human being sitting in the seat yells, “Go back to your country, retard!” (Just in case you don’t get it, the passenger assumed Jose was a Special Olympian from another country and somehow conceived of this as an appropriate expression of his feelings.)

It’s funny—I was busy doing something when JC told me this story and did not necessarily stop what I was doing to listen, though I was in fact doing so. Once he got the ‘punch line,’ I did stop and some profound sadness welled up inside me. How could someone possess such an asine attitude? How could someone risk Idaho’s reputation or confirm what others already believe about it?

There are days when I have no positive regard for my fellow human beings; today was such a day.
