Erin does a pretty good job of being open-minded when it comes to new foods. Maggie will be three soon, so she is the picture of willingness to explore different things. I, on the other hand, am old before my time and always have been–I don’t like trying new things. I still remember my Dad’s rule from growing up: “If I don’t eat it, then you don’t have to either.” I guess I took that and made it my own, twisting its intent into something else, something very closed-minded (Erin once made me eat a spoonful of mashed cauliflower (think healthy mashed potatoes)–I almost soiled her with vomit).
Anyway, Erin has been telling me for some time that sardines are really good for you. One of her old bosses in Asheville used to eat a can a day for lunch and he was evidently the epitome of health. Then, last week, I ran across this article in the New York Times, talking about how sardines are one of the eleven healthiest foods you’re probably not eating. This got our wheels turning and we finally decided to take the plunge (I say ‘we’ knowing that it is I who has the problem being adventurous). You know what? If you like fish, they’re pretty good. But you have to really like fish; if you’re one of those people who claims to not like any seafood, stay far, far away. I tried the ones in olive oil, but they are also available in spring water and a host of different sauces. And the list of health benefits is quite long.
You might be asking what Maggie thinks. Well, tonight, after having a sandwich for dinner, she asked for fish. She knows this means sardines because when I had her try them the other day, I asked her if she’d like some fish. So, she and her Mama sat down at the table and devoured a can of sardines together. Erin looked at me and said, “I never thought I’d be sitting at the table sharing a can of sardines with my three year old daughter.” Pretty cool, if you ask me.
