Our evolution, herein contained

Oh well

Well, for all intents and purposes, deer hunting season #1 is over for me (although the season does not close until 31 Oct, I want to spend time with Erin and Maggie, especially since they’ve been gone for 2 weeks). I went out today with a co-worker. We got a good start by being in our spots at least a half hour prior to sunrise. And we discovered a couple good things–four inches of new snow on the ground and a set of new tracks. So, things were looking good. Then the fog rolled in–a heavy, thick fog which limited our visibility to 50-100 yards. It was a waste of our time to stay in place; that fog could have lasted for hours. We drove down the mountain and didn’t see anything until we were almost back to the main road. JC saw four deer but we couldn’t tell whether they were male or female (only kids under 18 can shoot the does), so we pressed in an effort to cut them off. We dismounted the truck but they had run up a steep hill. Then we saw a small doe by herself; we searched for her friends but, again, to no avail. We made for home feeling the requisite disappointment but knowing that one never wins if one doesn’t play.

Though the season was unproductive in terms of a successful harvest, I did learn a couple things and plan on using them to hopefully bring something home next year.
