More hunting stuff?
Posted on October 14, 2007 - Filed Under Outdoors, I AM an animal!!!, And your point is?
I had written a much longer version of this post but I heard Erin’s voice in my head: “People don’t want to read some boring tale about your hunting adventures.” Fair enough. So, in an effort to keep it short:
I hunted by myself both days this weekend. My co-worker, JC, was not able to come on Saturday (because he’s trying to sell his house–definitely understandable) or Sunday (still don’t know why–it really sucks to be left in the dark and let down). No, it’s not safe (if I fall or encounter a mountain lion, who’s going to assist me?) and not practical (hauling an animal out oneself, especially with these hills and mountains in mind, is difficult at best). But I wasn’t about to let someone else decide for me whether I went hunting, so I threw caution to the wind. Was it dangerous? Sure, but as my dad would say, so is walking down the street. In fact, spending time in the woods is probably a lot safer than spending time in a town or city somewhere. Anyway, I didn’t shoot a deer; I didn’t even see any.
However, I do have a good story. Saturday was kind of screwed-up. I had been dealing with a bad cold and allergies all week and was feeling pretty badly Friday night. It, and not having all my hunting stuff ready, caused me to get to bed late which caused me to wake up late. I ended up not getting into my spot until 9am. The really funny thing about that is the following story. I parked my truck, got all my stuff together, and started walking down a trail found. I was out of my truck for literally 5 minutes when I saw a slight movement up the side of the hill to my right. I froze and watched. Down the hill she came, a female elk. I paused for a minute because I am not all that terribly experienced with seeing animals in the wild and I think cow elk are strange looking animals. By the time I had things mentally figured out, 3 more were following her. They were about 25 yards away from where I was standing. And then, like something out of a dream, a male (bull) elk appeared. He wasn’t that big but enough so to shoot. The only problem is, elk season doesn’t begin until 1 Nov. So, I stood for a little while and let them watch me as well. Then, I told the male I would see him in a couple of weeks (the elk hunting in this area is restricted to males only).
Start sending me your good luck vibes; apparently, I need them. I am really looking forward to having to buy a freezer for all the meat.
