Our sweet little girl

Yesterday, we stopped by the Concert for Climate Change held in Boise. It was held in a park with nice green grass, so we let Maggie get down and walk as she wished. And walk she did!
One of the things she did was to walk up to another little girl, this one was three years old and had a tennis ball near her. Maggie grabbed the ball and started walking around with it. At one point, she tried to give it to a third little girl walking nearby. This other toddler just walked by and ignored Maggie. This is significant because it gives us a chance to mention that Maggie is unusually willing to share and have things taken from her without protest. It’s really strange to watch. The thing which makes us kind of sad is that once she goes to daycare, she will very quickly loose this generosity and apparent sweetness. But, in a sense, that’s a good thing because some people just aren’t very friendly to really nice people; in fact, they can be downright mean and freely take advantage. The hope all parents should have is that they are able to teach their little ones balance in all things, including that there are those who will love and do their best to not hurt you but that there are also those who will treat you with no regard for your humanity.
Obviously, the little girl who didn’t accept Maggie’s offer of the ball didn’t have any of this on her mind. But it did get me to thinking about Maggie’s personality and our obligation to help her remain sweet and outgoing but also teach her that not everyone will appreciate it for what it is.
