Red Cross Pet First Aid

I did something yesterday I have been wanting to do for some time: I attended the American Red Cross class on Pet First Aid. This weekend was a good one for me to do something like this because I didn’t have any papers to grade or anything. I guess the thing which drove me to actually get off my duff and sign up for/attend the class was someone’s mention on a hiking website about the importance of having this kind of knowledge when you hike with your dog.
Anyway, as for what I thought about the class, on the whole it was worth it. The instructor, a woman named Vicky, is very experienced regarding animal medical care. She was articulate and presented the material in logical, coherent way. The materials, limited to a book put out by the Red Cross and the Humane Society, was pretty much a mirror image of the lecture. There was also a video, shown at intervals throughout the class, was a third way in which the same information was presented. We practiced what we were taught on life-size stuffed dogs, a reasonably effective way to accomplish the application goal of the class. Overall, if one has the self-discipline to read a good book on the subject, I would not recommend taking the class; however, if one is the type who needs the face-to-face interaction of the classroom and doesn’t need every single detail, the class is a good thing. There’s also a time consideration to be had: The class required 5 hours, whereas reading a good book on the subject would probably take longer. One other note: The class cost $30.

I didn’t know such a class (or books on the subject) existed. It is something I’ll be interested in once our puppy gets a bit bigger and I can start running her ragged. I got Amy a dog for our anniversary a few weeks ago and it’s like having a baby all over again. I have quite a few questions for you on dogs, but I’ll wait till we talk again. I hope all is well your way.
