Some GOP strategist somewhere is really hammering out ways to make November better for them. CNN is reporting that Republicans are proposing a $100 gas rebate for every American. The story also includes the nice little tidbit that drilling in the ANWR (Alaskan National Wildlife Refuge) will be allowed. This makes me SO FREAKIN’ mad for two reasons (off the top of my head):
1. The $100 thing is so clearly an attempt to pacify the American people into not being so damn mad about the price of gas. They know that if they don’t get us to calm down, we are going to mad at them because they’re in power and therefore, the unlucky ones to whom it’s easy to point a finger. What makes me even more mad is that people are going to fall for this.
2. Why are they so determined to get this ANWR thing through? Because the energy lobby is one of the biggest in Washington and the oil companies donate huge amounts to help the members get elected. They have a tremendous amount of reciprocal back scratching to do or they face the possible loss of those very important campaign contributions. Well, getting drilling permitted in ANWR will be a huge deal for the oil companies. In fact, they probably don’t care if Congress repeals their tax breaks, so long as they can get up there and destroy that beautiful land.
I’ll tell you this: Remember those tax rebate checks that Bush issued in 2001, the ones that cost the gov’t so much money and greatly assisted in getting our nation into the huge financial trouble we’re in right now? Well, I said then that I was going to donate mine to the Democrat I liked the most and whom I felt had the best chance of defeating Bush in ‘04. I ended up not doing it because something came up that we thought we ‘needed’ to use that money for. This time, it’s going to be different: If I receive one of these checks, it will be sent (hopefully along with Erin’s too) to some organization, whether that be one doing the best work to get us away from oil or some environmental group working to protect our land.
DON’T BE FOOLED!!! They are only proposing giving you this money so that you will shut up, be quiet, not be as mad, and vote for them (or at least not against them) in Nov.
