Maggie updates

I took Maggie to the pediatrician yesterday to check her ears and discuss drink options other than formula and milk. (I tried milk with Maggie a month ago and she got diarrhea.) Maggie has no ear infection despite her grabbing at her ears at night. We discussed our milk options (Soy, Lactose free, almond, goat and rice milk). Jason and I have reservations about soy milk because of some research concerning the estrogen soy contains which may lead to early puberty in children. The doctor said there is way to much hype about soy milk and that it would be a fine alternative to milk. Regular milk is also a concern because of the hormones and more importantly the antibiotics given to the cows also leading to earlier puberty. Jason and I drink organic and hormone free milk so the latter is really not an issue. The pediatrician suggested getting Maggie used to milk by slowly adding it to her diet again; that’s probably what we’re going to do. The other milks - goat, almond and rice - don’t have enough nutrients in them on their own; however, if she is getting a good diet, then using rice milk should be a fine choice.
A little off the subject of Maggie but interesting none the less was my discussion with the Pediatrician about soy estrogens and hormones in dairy products causing puberty earlier. According to the research she has read, kids are going through puberty 1-2 months earlier than 30 years ago. However, she does not attribute this earlier puberty to dairy or soy; she firmly believes it has everything to do with children being bigger - fatter - these days. Evidently there is a strong correlation between obesity and early puberty. With all that stated, it is even more interesting to know that the pediatrician feeds her kids organic milk and other products as well as kills her own dear and elk meat each season.
Some quick stats on Maggie: She weighted in at 18lbs, finally doubling her birth weight. She gained 1lb 5 oz since her last visit in January. She has also grown an half inch since January and is now 28 and 1/2 inches tall. I noticed yesterday afternoon that she has 2 more teeth pushing through, one on either side of her top teeth. Including these two teeth, that makes eight total. I think her fussiness lately can be attributed to these two teeth. By the way, another interesting correlation the pediatrician told me about was that the later a baby gets teeth the earlier the puberty (keep in mind here that correlation does not necessarily imply causation).
