A big change for a little babe.

A little more than a week ago Maggie and I finally decided it was time to wean. Maggie was becoming less interested in breastfeeding and had cut down to a morning and a bedtime feeding for about the last month. Her reduction in feedings allowed me to look forward to a bit more freedom concerning my ability to eat and drink what I want and to have Jason be able to take over, when needed, the morning and nighttime rituals. I wasn’t too worried about the effects of ending breastfeeding. When I introduced the bottle or what we call ‘bobby’ she took right to it. At first I tried regular milk with her and she liked it but it didn’t agree with her belly. Since she is so thin and still under 12 months I decided to put her on an organic toddler formula. At first she did not like the taste and gave me an icky face but she soon started to like it. The greatest part about her drinking from a bottle (which made me feel better about ending breastfeeding) was that Jason now puts Maggie to sleep. After her bath, he and Maggie sit on the couch together. Maggie drinks her bottle in Jason’s arms and he reads to her until she falls asleep. It is definitely a nice change. I was sad at first about weaning her because it pretty much signifies to me that she is becoming less of a baby and more of a toddler. I know that many women breastfeed until their children are 2 years old but that lifestyle is not for me.

Maggie has made a couple more changes in her diet. She no longer takes pacifiers and she will not eat baby food anymore. I’m guessing that she tasted the good stuff and doesn’t want anymore bland stuff. I am happy with her not eating baby food anymore because it offsets the cost of formula. The price of the formula we are using is outrageous. All my pocketbook can say is thank god for breasts!

Maggie has also become very fussy about eating. One day she will eat all her peaches and the next she throws them to the Wilson. She will eat a lot one day and the next hardly any. Oh well, I guess that is infamous for baby/toddler behavior.

Sounds like Maggie is doing quite well and doing very normal behavior. I’m proud of you for hanging in there almost a year of breast feeding. Dont worry about what other mom’s do. You know whats best for maggie and YOUR family.
    miss you
