Update

In case you’re interested, there’s an update on Nell and Jim Hamm here. How cool would it be to be the grandchildren of these people, being able to go to school and tell your friends your grandparents fought off a mountain lion that would have surely killed at least your grandfather if not for their efforts to fend it off? You always hear that kids and grandkids view their elders, at least up to a certain age, as larger than life, perhaps even like mythical hereos. Well, these people deserve that kind of respect from their youngsters, if they have any.

It sounds great, but hate to see us kill so many species, I guess it is them or us
maybe there are places we don`t belong, perhaps that is why habitats are being destroyed such as Florida,a very good example, maybe you don`t agree.
Well, you certainly hit the nail on the head as far as what the struggles, both ideological and practical, are. I don’t think it’s that we don’t belong there; humans have shown themselves, even prior to the advent of modern technology, to be a species which can survive in nearly any climate the Earth has to offer. I think it’s a case of us not belonging in places where we are going to destroy the environment and live excessively. Habitats are being destroyed in the name of one thing–money. There are secondary reasons as well, chief among them being the fact that we just can’t resist overpopulating the planet, not only through having more and more kids but also through artificially lengthening our natural lifespans. Anyway, we live as though there is no tomorrow for which we might want to preserve this place we call home.
As far as the couple fighting off the cat, two things: 1. I only speak so highly of them because they acted with courage and did so being 65 and 70 years old and 2. nature’s way is cruel, at least in our limited perspective. It’s not like they were out there with electronic targeting devices or even weapons; they had simply gone out for a hike. They fought off that cat through sheer determination and the will to fight. They were able to do so, thereby triumphing over the cat’s need for food and instinct to kill. The lion had been the victor other times, most assuredly.
I agree( ARE YOU SURPRISED)
