“Stand, Stand, Stand!”*

*Stand by Sly and the Family Stone. They aren’t necessarily one of my favorite bands or anything (although I do like them) but they are noteworthy because of their contribution to the musical and wider cultural picture of their time.

Y’all need an update on Maggie. Prior to Christmas vacation, she was standing on her own for maybe one or three seconds. It was cool. Then we came home and she suddenly had no interest in trying. That went on until about a week ago. I came home from work one day and Erin excitedly told me that Maggie had stood that day, raised her hands above her head, and smiled the biggest smile ever. It took a day or two but I was finally able to witness this as well. As time has gone on this week, she has gotten increasingly daring, to where now she actually stands up in the bathtub during her baths. It’s really cool to watch; she just sort of stands there, very stable and much more sure of herself than before. In fact, whereas before gravity would take her back to a seated position, now she takes herself there. My mother made the prediction last weekend that Maggie would be walking by her first birthday; at the time, I kind of doubted the idea but now I am inclined to believe it. Anyway, be sure to take a look at the pictures we have posted of Maggie standing in the kitchen.

She has started another thing which has quickly become her new favorite activity–climbing onto the couch and love seat. She can’t do it independently just yet; she uses me to get good footing, starting out on my belly and moving deftly up onto my shoulder and finally onto the cushions. I’m sure I’m reading too much into it, projecting my own desires for her, but this makes me especially proud. I can’t help hoping this is an early sign she will have an interest in climbing and hiking. For now, it’s probably wise to calm my jets and let her learn to feed herself first.
