“And you told me lovin’ lies/And broke my heart”*

*Lovin’ Lies by Willie Nelson. Erin and I had the distinct pleasure of seeing Willie perform in Asheville. It was pretty freakin’ awesome.Â
Erin, Maggie, and I went to FL over the Christmas holiday to visit with Erin’s parents and brother. One day at breakfast, the topic of Santa Claus came up. If you know me really well, you’ll be able to predict just what I had to say regarding the subject. If not, here’s the gist: It seems troublesome to me that we raise our children to believe in something we absolutely know to be false. From one side of our mouths, we instruct them to be honest and never lie; the other side simultaneously and knowingly conveys to them this complete falsehood. Sure, I think children need wonder in their lives…it is one of the aspects of childhood I think we adults could stand to get intimately reacquainted with. But there are plenty of magnificent and wonderful things out there which are also true. The act of giving to someone less fortunate, the human body, love, watching raw ingredients transform into a delicious meal, the leaves of a tree, the way rivers, sand, and air all carve rock into incredible shapes, the stars in the sky, the ability of a human being to work at becoming something they have always dreamed of. I would much rather raise Maggie to believe in these things than in some jolly old fat guy who symbolizes the cancer of hyper consumerism which all of us are continually allowing to eat away at our souls. Good luck to me, though, in trying to convince anyone normal of this, including Maggie’s mama and other loved ones.
I thought I was alone in these feelings until I read the following post on a blog I keep an eye on. It tells a funny story regarding how a couple of parents partially saw their way clear concerning the Santa quandary. It is definitely worth the read. By the way, if you don’t know how to get to what I’m talking about, it’s simple: just click on the hyperlinked word ‘post’ above.

What a Grinch. Maggie and I will be making Jason put up & decorate every single Christmas tree from this day forward.
After he does all the decorating at your place, off to Florida to do ours. I think we ought to buy him a sleigh to use with the reindeers included.
