The Doggie-do doesn’t feel very good

As if life doesn’t bring with it enough struggles, we have been dealing with Wilson’s persistent allergy problems. He itches a lot, sometimes gets ‘hot spots’, paws at his eyes occasionally, and will sometimes chew at his skin. We talked about this with our vet back in Asheville ad nauseam and reached no kind of acceptable solution. When the fam stayed with B & S in FL, he seemed to do a lot better. Then, on our way out here, it seemed to flare back up and hasn’t stopped. In fact, it seems to have gotten worse. We went to a vet in Boise yesterday and got the same old story: There is no short answer because allergies are very mysterious. Basically, it could be his food, environment, or the environment, i.e. plants, etc. The latter most of these doesn’t make immediate sense because the environment here is very different than in NC, yet his problems persist. So, it could be his food (seemingly more likely) or his environment. He could be allergic to us (but not the baby because it started before her arrival) or maybe the cat (Charley specifically since Abbey is not here) but nothing else seems to be consistent enough to be the correct explanation. Although, maybe it’s dust. Yes, it’s true that dusting is something we don’t do but it’s also true that dust is everywhere in everyone’s home. But it’s seemingly more prevalent here in this extremely dry environment. Plus we just moved into this brand new house, which is probably a dust repository.

Anyway, this really sucks. It feels like there’s nothing we can do, at least in order to get an answer right away. That’s the problem–everything we can do takes a couple months to see if the thing we have eliminated was causing the problem. I guess we’re going to have to buckle down and introduce a new food and see if that works. That means he doesn’t get any treats, table food, or anything else because those things may be the problem. I don’t know…but what I do know is it really sucks to have someone you love suffering and there be nothing you can do about it.

After reading your thoughts on Wilson, I begin to wonder if the new carpeting or the glue that was used for the linoleum is a cause. Sounds to me it is an environmental problem rather than food.
