Happy Thanksgiving everyone!!

Posted on November 23, 2006 - Filed Under Uncategorized

We did it! We pulled off our first on-our-own Thanksgiving. Does that mean we are truly adults now? (Considering the number of ‘babies having babies’ these days and the number of people who cannot tolerate each other enough to pull off something like this, I think maybe it might.) Erin did 90% of the actual work, to include all of the shopping and all of the food preparation. I invited the guests and watched Maggie while Erin made everything. She masterfully created a meal of turkey, ham, sweet potatoes, her mom’s soon to be famous stuffing, gravy, biscuits, and pumpkin pie. It was all very good (I’m not just saying that to be nice…it really was). Our guests were people from work and their families: S.F. and her husband (K.F.) and two year old daughter (A.F.) and J.D. and her nine year old daughter H.D. Everyone stayed for two to three hours and were quite helpful in cleaning up. J.D. brought the mashed potatoes and S.F. brought some dessert and drinks. It was nice to be with people and not just by ourselves. One of the things about having the job I do and therefore having the life we have is having to accept the people around you at each location as your kind of surrogate family. And truth be told, that can really work out sometimes. There’s the chance to start over again because no one has any of the anger, sadness, resentment, etc. over things that occurred in the past. On the other hand, it takes time to build trust and eventually, any kind of intimacy. So, it’s one of the hazards of the job but it does work out because the world is full of interesting and fun people. Many people, if not forced to meet new people, sit in their own world for basically their whole lives never really engaging with anyone who challenges and expands them. That said, we miss all of you and hope you all enjoyed a day of love and gratitude.

Congratulations on you first Thanksgiving dinner. It can be exhausting but worth the effort, I know Erin is a good cook, she loved to help with dinner when she was a little girl. Love the pictures of Maggie and Erin holding part of the feast. You should have trapped the big bird we saw in your Asheville backyard, that would have been a real big turkey dinner. Try stuffing that, how many packages would have been used.

    Hi All,
Had to look and see new pictures of Maggie. Erin, love your hair. Jason, miss the discussions. Thought I would write while I was here. I have been studying world religions, reading the Gospel of Thomas and reading about Mithra. Week before last, had to write some senators, congressman and the governor. Made some phone calls and voila! Seems my father cannot be made to move to another nursing home without my approval. I’ll see how long that lasts. I thought while I was at it I would reconsider my views on political topics. Found out I am for gay marriage for the same reasons everyone gets married. Heard 4 out of 10 babies are born out of wedlock, majority to mothers in their twenties. Figured this was due to health insurance and medicaid more than anything else. If I were in office I would give a marriage credit. It would raise more people from poverty level to middle class and we need it. I could make it happen by eliminating half of the earned income credit for cohabitants. Makes sense to me. Should make more people eligible for their own health insurance. Figure the only way to make it happen is to make it more economical. See, I could have used you for a sounding board. I have found out I can be far right, far left and in between. I have been taking a Pilates class, losing weight and Christmas shopping. Speaking of which, Mithra was born on December 27th. I am expecting a new grandbaby in May, which beats the dream I had last night that I was expecting. A rather perplexing dream in which I thought I would be 80 when the child graduated from high school. I certainly could go without such a prolonged pregnany. Anyhow, looking forward to another grandchild. Hope your holidays are wonderful. Jason, be careful with those impressionable minds you are molding. As for bathtime, girls have a right to change their mind.
Hope all is well in Kansas. Miss you all.
