Raising Us

Our evolution, herein contained

“Oh, yesterdays are over my shoulder,/So I can’t look back for too long./There’s just too much to see waiting in front of me/These changes in latitudes, changes in attitudes,/Nothing remains quite the same.”*

*Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes by Jimmy Buffet. I don’t even like Jimmy Buffet, but I can’t help thinking about this song when thinking about our move.

Some have asked us whether we’re scared about the move. We are and there’s no denying it. We truly have no idea what we’ve gotten ourselves into. As I have written before, we know the job itself is a good thing but the location is a little unsettling. It is so completely different from anything either of us has ever experienced. And if there’s anything which scares people, it’s the unknown. However, I have to admit, there is a part of me (and maybe Erin too…I haven’t asked her) which is simultaneously thrilled at this. It’s kind of cool to be walking into something for which you have no idea regarding the outcome: will we like Mtn Home? will it be intolerably boring? will being away from Asheville be really hard on us? will the local area provide enough to keep both of us and Maggie stimulated? will we fall in love with the area and never want to leave? We are the kind of people who don’t shy away from the recognition that any of these could happen. We believe that if you don’t face your fear, you will never conquer it. In this move, we are not only facing the fear but fully embracing it. It’s wonderful knowing that, by doing so, we have already defeated it. Now we must move on to the greater challenge, indeed the greater enemy—ourselves. So many times in our lives, we allow our attitudes, expectations, and limitations negatively impact how well things go for us. The greatest challenge for Erin and I, if in fact Mtn Home is not the greatest place, will be to rise above ourselves and realize that it will be good or bad in direct correlation to what we allow it to be through our attitudes.
