Day 3–Salina, KS

Posted on October 11, 2006 - Filed Under Uncategorized

Today was a VERY long day. We started off from St. Peters, MO (just outside St. Louis) at 9am. Because I did not bring any cool weather clothes with me and the forecast is calling for it, we needed to stop somewhere and get me something to use to stay warm. We ended up at an outlet mall where I bought a sweatshirt (I usually don’t need a lot to stay warm). We then drove on to Columbia, MO where we stopped at Bob Evans for lunch. Erin had a really good salad and Maggie sat in a real height chair for the first time ever. The point is, we took a really long time there. The bottom line is, we didn’t get into our final destination–Salina, KS–until around 6:30 or 7. And this was Maggie’s worst day thus far as far as crying, etc. I fear she is getting reversed in her sleeping schedule, i.e. napping so much during the day that her body says it doesn’t need to sleep at night. That would be very bad. It impacts her Mama badly, considering that I don’t even begin to hear her crying at night when she wakes up. Of course, Erin could lessen the impact somewhat by napping during the day; alas, she is stubborn and doesn’t really see the need.

Salina is a typical small Midwest town. There’s really nothing significant going on here from what I can tell. This appears to be where KS flattens out. We saw a bobcat (funny how similar it looks to Charley, at least in the face) running toward the highway as we were driving (it thought better of the idea and turned around); Erin thought it was a mountain lion at first. According to the front desk attendant at our hotel, while bobcats do exist here, seeing one is quite rare. I have to admit, at the risk of making us sounds like city-bound dorks, that it was pretty cool. Speaking of the hotel, it is the nicest and least expensive we’ve stayed in so far. It’s a Holiday Inn and by the looks of it, hosts conferences and the like. It has a restuarant/bar (where I’m writing right now while enjoying a couple cold frosty mugs) and a really nice breakfast and lunch dining room. The room itself is more than enough.

Tomorrow, we land in Colorado Springs. While there, we’ll going to visit my sister who will meet her niece for the first time. We’re really looking forward to that, both because of Jessica but also because I have never seen CO and have always wanted to. I am very jealous of her living there; every conversation which goes by when she doesn’t mention getting outdoors in the woods makes me sad (can you take a hint, Jessica?). Why couldn’t she have lived in the Virginia Beach area and us in CO? Both of us would have been happy with that. Oh well, I guess sometimes that’s the way it goes.

Traveling across America, how cool is that? You are having the chance to see bobcats and even Holiday Inn receptionists. I am listening to the CD that you and Erin gave out during your wedding. Do you remember that?

I am in Africa at the moment and it is hot. Still heating 100 degrees during the day. I love to sweat so it is o.k.

Have fun and tell Erin and the little one hi for me.

    Brian–
So good to hear from you and moreso that you are doing well. And we are absolutely delighted to hear that people are still listening to the CD. At that point in our life together, I think it was the tangible object we had created together of which we were most proud. Obviously, that designation now goes to the Little Bit, but we still really like the CD. Can you say where in Africa you are? Erin and I are a little jealous, although we know it’s probably not a lot of fun being there for work. When do you go home?
