Saturday night, part 1

I went out to dinner Saturday evening with this guy from my part of the class. He is one step shy of being at the top of our organizational structure. He’s been around for 20 years. It was pretty cool to spend two hours talking to someone like this, truly someone I could think of as a mentor.

We went a steak house called Buck’s Place. The food was good, if you like a steak and baked potato kind of place. I splurged and got myself filet mignon. It was the first time I even had it. I’m not a steak person, so to me it was a good piece of steak and not much more.

The significant thing about this dinner for me was the conservation. Specifically, I asked him if the instructor position is the kind of thing I need to be doing at this point in my career. I was looking to confirm my belief that it is. He told me that it is absolutely the right thing and the right time to be doing it. He indicated that this job is the kind of thing that makes people more effective in earning promotions, even to the position he holds and the only one higher than him. That made me feel really good. I always knew it was the case but to hear it from someone who actually knows from having done it that way himself is a really good thing.
