Weekend #1 shot to heck

I tried to have fun this weekend, I really did.
Friday night–I explored downtown Montgomery. If it weren’t for the Montgomery Biscuits, the local AA baseball team, there would have been absolutely nothing going on. Maybe it’s just me but the distinct level of inactivity is very strange for a town of this size. I’m being serious: there were no people walking around, bars, art galleries, music venues, etc. I mean, there’s more action going on in downtown Indiana, PA on a Friday when the students aren’t in town than there was this past Friday here. It’s bizarre. The only thing happening was the Biscuits game, which, based on the number of cars, was being attended by a lot of people. I finally found the Montgomery Brewing Company. It looked cool when I got there; there was even a band setting up, so I was full of anticipation. So, I bellied up to the bar and ordered a beer, a Goat Hill Pale Ale, brewed on-site. I had had a light dinner, so I decided to also order the Brewer’s Burger. (Any sandwich that includes gouda automatically catches my attention. As a sidenote, just to give a glimpse into what type of town Montgomery is, they actually have a link off of the website to another site that explains what gouda is.) The burger was pretty decent but I didn’t like the beer. The atmosphere of the place was good, until the band started to play. They were called Electric Circus. They are an ’80s hard rock cover band. The band itself–the guitarist, drummer, and bassist–seemed well rehearsed and pretty tight; the lead singer, a female, was horrible. The best way I can explain the way she sounded is to say that she sounded exactly how I would imagine someone would if they were permanently attached at the mouth to a helium tank. I think the reason she sounded this way was her attempt to pull off the ’80s thing in an ultra Lita Ford kind of way. I think her problem is that she hasn’t studied the vocal stylings of those she is trying to emulate enough to see that none of them sang that way all the time; sometimes, they actually sang instead of sounding as though they were trying to unconstipate themselves. I left after only one set. One funny thing about it was that a woman who looked like she cound have one of the band members’ mother brought them an eight pack of Gatorade. I thought that was nice. So, I went home and watched 16 Blocks. It was pretty decent but I don’t know if I’d actually recommend it.
Well, I don’t want to make this post incredibly long, which it would end up being if I included the terrible experience I had last night, so I’m going to break it off here. Stay tuned for a post about Saturday.
