On the road

Well, right now I am on the road back ‘home’ to Fletcher after having dropped Erin, Maggie, and the animals off with Erin’s parents in Florida. I rented a car to come back; good for me, they did not have any compact or economy cars (which is what I reserved because I don’t have much need for amenities…just get me there, with as little money out of my pocket as possible), so I got upgraded to a Monte Carlo. It’s actually a pretty nice car–fast enough and very comfortable.

So, I am on the backside of stopping somewhere in South Carolina. I needed to eat but wasn’t interested in fast food. I was going to try to make it home for under $10 (not including the cost of gas) but my aforementioned temporary aversion to fast food sort of ruined that. So, when I saw the highway-side sign for a place Jasper’s Porch, I figured I’d give it a go. The subtitle of ‘Lakeside Dining’ added to the allure. It looked from the front but once I stepped inside, I began to have my doubts. The hostess briefed me that the buffet was $7.95; not necessarily being a buffet person (although the variety and ‘more bang for your buck’ aspects do appeal to me), I didn’t jump on that. After looking at the spread, I was very glad I didn’t. Fried chicken and pork chops for meat, mac ‘n cheese and rice for carbs, some cooked to hell and back veggies, minimal salad offering, and a few desserts. Pretty disappointing, although I am in the south, so the chicken may have been worth price by itself. Anyway, I decided on the burger. The really unfortunate thing–it took me about 15 minutes to place my order due to lack of attention from a server (the hostess actually took my order). Once the food got to me, I was pleased as the burger was pretty good. The best thing happened as I was finishing up. The restuarant is indeed beside some water, although I wouldn’t call it a lake. Anyway, at one point, I look out to the water and what do I see? A six foot aligator–I wish I had had the camera with me. I don’t believe I have ever seen a real gator, so that was pretty cool. All and all, I should have just gone to Hooters.
Well, Erin is settling in for the next five weeks. I hope all goes well; it’s going to be quite an adjustment. Being out of her element, I am sure she would appreciate a phone call or two from those of you who have her cell phone number; she would probably like to hear from friends.

I better get back on the road. I’ve still got a good amount of driving to do before the end of the day.

Well, as much as we want Maggie to be close to nature, take care when trying to get that picture. I hear that the alligator community regards babies as good eatin’.
