“…if I die in Raleigh/At least I will die free”

As some of you know, we have neglected the blog for the last week or two for good reason: We have been in PA visiting my family and saying ’so-long’ before the big move.
As a function of doing this trip, we had to do a lot of driving. We’ve known for a little while now that Maggie has lost any affection she ever had for riding in the car. We don’t really know why–all we know for sure is that the later in the day it is, the more she screams as we head on down the road. In an effort to curtail some of this fussiness, I will sometimes turn on the stereo and see if some music will calm her. Most of the time, it doesn’t work. However, there is one song which always seems to get her to stop. It’s called “Wagon Wheel” and it is performed by The Old Crow Medicine Show. (You can watch the video by clicking here.) I don’t know what the magic of this tune is but I swear I am telling the truth when I say that, if she is fussy and we play this song, she goes silent. It works especially well if someone is in the backseat with her and singing to her while looking her right in the eyes. Yes, we’ve tried this with other songs but it just does not seem to work nearly as well. It gives me a good feeling…this song is hard-core bluegrass. It’s got a really good opening fiddle lick that Maggie seems to immediately recognize, so hopefully we’re raising a future good ‘ole girl who will keep her parents entertained on sleepy Saturday nights several years from now with her awesome fiddle playing. Wouldn’t that be nice?
